A Glorious Summer So Far…and Big News!

Writers’ Workshop & Retreat

Writers—both acclaimed and aspiring—gathered in the quaint yet energizing town of Edale, England for WordTheatre’s 9th annual Writers’ Workshop & Retreat. Led by Peter Orner, a group of 14 participants—half from North America, half from Britain, half women, half men—delved into the intricacies, inspirations and obstacles of their own writing. Mornings consisted of workshop sessions followed by lunch and time to explore the breathtaking Hope Valley. Evening salons featured special guests, Andrew SmithLizzy BarberPeter Sansom and Donal McLaughlin. A final dinner and performance showcased the talent and work diligently developed during the week.

“This trip was one of the best I’ve ever had, and I can’t thank you enough for holding space and fostering such an incredible community in and beyond Edale.”
—Ben Benjamin

“The retreat, ironically, stays with you after you emerge from the retreat. It’s been 2 weeks nearly, and I am still reliving every moment, or rather, my soul is; because the nourishment I received to infuse into my writing is, well, still fermenting. I didn’t know what to expect. I encountered and learnt from extraordinary people whether they were fellow retreaters or facilitators; I am still motivated to create, but most importantly for me, I began to understand it’s OK to reach down into vulnerable parts of ourselves and share that with others. The world needs this right now. Writers need to take up arms with their pens and show it’s OK to be vulnerable and reach down to share our stories.  I couldn’t have written this paragraph before the retreat. It’s still fermenting, as I mentioned, but I know I’ll recall this retreat as a very special time in my life.”
—David Molyneux

“Edale 2019 was exceptionally fun, inspiring and motivating. I know of no other creative retreat where the mix of people always seems to bring out the best in each of us. This year’s teacher, Peter Orner, was a task master in the best sense of the word. He made the classes exciting, challenging and pushed us to do work that I believe all of us found surprising we were capable of. As always, the food was delicious and we were pampered with morning snacks and evening cocktails. The salon guests were an interesting mix of accomplished people who were eager to share their knowledge and experience with us and continue conversations over sumptuous dinners at Kirsty and Tommy’s magical English manor. What I treasure the most is what I have taken home with me, a renewed dedication to writing, a host of new authors to explore, friendships renewed and started plus the pleasure of looking forward to next year’s 10th Writers’ Retreat anniversary in Edale.

—Linda York

London Performance

After the workshop, many of the participants headed down to London. For some, it was home. For some, it was an opportunity to extend their stay in England. Everybody gathered at Crazy Coqs for an extraordinary evening of  Voices from the American Heartland: Stories by Peter Orner. Curated, cast and directed by WordTheatre Artistic Director Cedering Fox, the evening featured stories by workshop leader, Peter Orner.

Acclaimed actors David SoulDamien MolonyIan HartRhashan StoneMadeleine Potter and Emily Bruni, brought to life Orner’s work, which explores the realities and diversity of human experience in a captivating and truly moving manner. On the heels of leading Hugh Jackman’s 27-date European tour, featured violinist, Lizzie Ball, dazzled the audience with her profound, soulful accompaniment.
