An evening of world class short stories about dogs brought to life by talented actors. Performances were  followed by a conversation with the authors moderated by Bill Henderson, founder of The Pushcart Prize and author of “All My Dogs: A Life.”
  • Carla Gugino (Political Animals, Watchmen) read “Mastiff” by Joyce Carol Oates, published in The New Yorker 2013.
  • Samantha Mathis (Under the Dome, American Psycho)  read “A Full-Service Shelter” by Amy Hempel, nominated by Joyce Carol Oates and featured in the 2014 Pushcart Prize XXXVIII.

About our Authors:

Joyce Carol Oates is a Pulitzer Prize nominee and winner of the National Medal of Humanities, the National Book Critics Circle Ivan Sandrof Lifetime Achievement Award, the National Book Award and the PEN/Malamud Award for excellence in short fiction. She is a New York Times bestselling author and regularly featured in such publications as The New Yorker and Harper’s Magazine, among many others. She is a professor at Princeton University.

Hempel’s stories are some of the most extensively anthologized of the last quarter century and her four collections have received rave reviews. She has received a Guggenheim Fellowship and an inaugural fellowship from the United States Artists Foundation. Her stories have appeared in Harper’s,  GQVanity Fair, and many other publications and have been anthologized in The Best American Short Stories and The Pushcart Prize among others.
