Guest Blog: Linda S. York, The 2018 Writers Retreat & Workshop

Linda York attended the 2018 WordTheatre Writers Workshop & Retreat. She sent us some warm words we’d like to share about her experience.

“I arrived in idyllic Edale completely depleted of energy, ideas and inspiration, but by the first workshop meeting the next morning, I felt surrounded by like minded friends who had come to Edale to discover what is inside of us that is hidden away from us in the process of living day-to-day. Our teacher, Margaret McMullen, quickly gained our trust and offered us points of entry into our own lives that we all wrote about, then read aloud to the other writers. There is something very powerful in reading your own work to an enthusiastic audience that really listens to what you are saying and reflects back heartfelt and honest emotions. WordTheatre Workshop makes me a braver writer. It allows me to stockpile ideas for writing pieces. I can talk with other writers who face similar obstacles and celebrate the success of each piece that is written there. In addition, the real work, the inside work takes place after class when we eat together, go on hikes, sing along to a well-played guitar and share pieces of our lives with people we have just met but feel like we have known each other all our lives. It makes me not only a better writer, but also I believe a better person. No small feat.”
