WordTheatre® is proud to announce a benefit event at Guerilla Atelier in the Downtown Arts District on February 28 @ 7:00 pm – 9:30 pm in conjunction with 1 Billion Rising: Stories. Music. Bourbon & Macaroons: A Benefit Performance for One Billion Rising, hosted by Gary Dourdan.
1 Billion Rising was the brainchild of “The Vagina Monologues” creator Eve Ensler. Her creative campaign is a call to action to end violence against women and children across the globe. 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than one billion women and girls. One Billion Rising is calling communities throughout the world to rise together to create a Revolution by using brave, new artistic initiatives to demand change.
Founder Eve Ensler talked to The Guardian UK about 1 Billion Rising when she explained, “We should be hysterical. Yes, I really think so. I mean, look at what’s going on! […]We have one in three women on the planet being raped or beaten. And all our best thinking – thinking – has brought us here.[…] Where is the action part, which is about rising up to do something about it? Until that thinking is translated into the body, and we are feeling what is happening, nothing is going to get us to motivate to change. I mean,” she begins to laugh in amazement, “I love that people think theorizing is stronger than dancing. I love that they think that’s a stronger way of changing the world.”
Picking up the rhythmic mantle of change is the host of the Stories. Music. Bourbon & Macaroons: A Benefit Performance for One Billion Rising event is Gary Dourdan of CSI fame. More than just a Crime Scene Investigator for a day job, by night this actor is spreading positive vibrations with his new love for music as he told Belinda Oates, “There are certainly things out there which are positive and inspire other people to do good. And there are a lot of good kids out there to. It’s about working with them and trying to cure any kind of prejudices and racism and these days with technology and how fast things are moving, it is possible to do that. There are a lot of things we cannot take for granted. We can know each more now, than we ever have. And it is about taking advantage of that. So, a lot of my music is about expressing that, love and some of the discretions of the past and present and what’s going on that needs to be changed. Music is the way to express all of these and some of the things going on in my mind and heart. It has certainly kept me sane, being able to express that through music.”
Describing Eve Ensler’s 1 Billion Rising, Drew Westen, a professor of psychology and psychiatry at Emory and the author of The Political Brain told The Nation “Charisma is in many ways an ability to move people to think that important change can happen. But it isn’t only words. Performance is part of it.” If performance is the key component to the success of 1 Billion Rising then, Dourdan is the perfect host of this 1 Billion Rising event as the former star or CSI explained, “But there will always be the general mediocrity in the arts. I don’t pay attention to that. I look for the more discerning artist, someone who really can express and share.” Get ready to feel the love, the stories and the music and be prepared to move to the beat for a good cause. Join WordTheatre® on Feb 28th at Guerilla Atelier and embrace the sound of change for 1 Billion Rising.
